Classical Art Course

Welcome to our Classical Art Course, a comprehensive program deeply rooted in the artistic traditions of 19th Century France and Florence, Italy. This time-honoured curriculum is still taught in the art schools of Florence today, and we are excited to make it accessible to all—whether you are a beginner or looking for a refresher.

Course Structure

Our course is divided into five transformative stages:

1. Bargue Drawing Method: Begin by mastering the foundational skills through this classical drawing technique.
2. Cast Drawing Method: Focus on drawing from classical casts, honing your observational skills and accuracy.
3. Grisaille Painting in Oils & Cast Grisaille Painting in Oils: Learn the techniques of painting in shades of grey to emphasize form and light.
4. Introduction to Colour Theory & Cast Painting in Oils: Delve into the world of color theory, including practice with still life in colour using oils.

5. Finally, we guide you into The Independent Artist stage, where you will develop your own artistic voice.

Mentorship Experience

At this crucial final stage, rather than traditional instruction, you will be mentored by Katharine. You will receive a structured plan designed to help you explore and develop your unique style. Katharine will offer critique and guidance throughout your journey.

Exhibition Opportunities

As a valued student, you will have automatic entry into our annual student exhibition and presentation, held every summer. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your progress and connect with other artists in the community.

We have three sessions each week to choose from when you sign up:

The course fee is for one session per week, term time only. The fee is payable monthly throughout the year to spread the cost of the terms into equal monthly payments, making it more manageable and affordable.

Each group is a mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced. You work at your own pace, so you can really get to grips with the methods and go above and beyond the level you may have stopped at, if you were doing it at home, to really unleash your full potential. You are encouraged to try the methods taught in class, in other mediums to ensure you are getting real world experience of the methods too.

The groups are very supportive, sociable and friendly and we aim to provide the perfect environment for you to grow as an artist and focus on building your skills and knowledge within a dedicated art studio.

Whether you have never done art before, whether you can or can’t draw, no matter what you think you can’t do, we will prove to you that you can do it in a non-judgmental and encouraging setting.

Trial Offer

Start with a trial of 4 weeks at an introductory price of £75. After that, if you wish to continue, you will need to sign up for the monthly direct debit of £78 per month. Paper for the drawing stages, easels, and drawing boards are provided during the class, as well as free tea, instant coffee, and biscuits. *

Any studio equipment or materials used over and above those described as part of the course fee above, will be charged at an additional studio fee of £5 to cover costs, per session, per person.
